Orangutan Odysseys Tours

Last Place on Earth Challenge - 19 August - 5 September 2017 - AUD $4,450

This amazing tour has been created to help raise urgent funds and awareness for the Leuser ecosystem in Sumatra. This breath-taking tropical lowland rainforest ecosystem with cloud covered mountains and swampy peatlands is one of the last refuges of the Sumatran orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos.

However the Leuser ecosystem in now under threat. Despite being protected under Indonesian national law, massive industrial development is being planned for logging, palm oil, pulp and paper plantations and mining which threaten the entire ecosystem.  The funds raised from this tour will go to our local partners working tirelessly on the ground to protect and restore the Leuser ecosystem.

This life-changing expedition will consist of a group of 10 - 12 adventurous and passionate people from countries around the world. The team will trek through pristine jungles, raft down rivers and climb a spectacular mountain.

The tour begins on International Orangutan Day- 19 August, 2017 and finishes on 5 September 2017. The expedition cost is $4,450 AUD per person as well as a fund-raising component of $2,500 AUD. 100% of monies raised will go towards on the ground conservation projects through The Orangutan Project (TOP). TOP President Leif Cocks says: ‘TOP strives to get the best conservation and welfare results for orangutans and their habitats by effectively using every dollar raised to support genuine on the ground conservation work through a wide range of partners. The Last Place on Earth Challenge is a perfect display of both the challenge to save orangutans and the spirit of mutual cooperation that is needed to meet that challenge.’

TPNP is a rare gem, a gorgeous forest ecosystem and home to so many beautiful and endangered species. I have worked with orangutans since 2006 and been enamoured with them for much longer than that. I invite you to join me on this fabulous tour and see if I can help you fall in love with orangutans as much as I do.

Jodie Ellen

Growing up I was one of those kids that knew exactly what I wanted to do and that was work with Great Apes. After I finished my Zoology degree in NSW, I moved to Queensland in 2003 to work at Australia Zoo and also began fundraising for The Orangutan Project. In 2006 I was fortunate enough to move to Kalimantan Borneo in conjunction with The Orangutan Project and AusAid to work as the Animal Care Coordinator at an orangutan rehabilitation centre which housed over 350 orangutans. My job involved everything from husbandry, nutrition, quarantine and enrichment but  I really found a calling in working to rehabilitate some of the orangutan orphans that were considered more difficult and helping them learn the skills to return to the wild. For the last 7 years I have been back in Australia working at the Adelaide Zoo as the primary orangutan keeper. During that time I spent almost 5 years at the SA State Representative for The Orangutan Project. After seeing how they work on the front line of conservation, I knew this was an organisation I was proud to stay involved with.Participants on this trip will raise a minimum of $1,000.00 AUD in fundraising which will go towards The Orangutan Project’s work for the endangered species.

Highlights:
