Cyclone Senyar slammed into Aceh and northern Sumatra on 25 to 26 November, triggering catastrophic floods and landslides across forests we have fought for decades to protect. Entire research stations and restoration nurseries have been swept away, staff houses destroyed, and key orangutan, elephant and tiger habitat is under water. Some of our colleagues in remote sites are still cut off, with roads, power and phone lines down. This is an emergency for both people and wildlife.
Our partners Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL) and HAkA are scrambling to keep everyone alive. Emergency teams are booking charter planes and helicopters for evacuations, running search and rescue missions, and delivering food, clean water, medicines, fuel and satellite phones into isolated forest and village communities. Thanks to early partner pledges, including an emergency commitment from The Orangutan Project, a first charter flight and vital communications gear are already in motion, but the costs are exploding and the original US$96,000 target now needs to be significantly higher.
Please give now to keep our team members and the forests they defend safe. Your gift will help pay for urgent helicopter and charter flights, fuel and supplies to reach trapped staff, emergency food and medical kits for rangers and local families, replacement satellite phones and radios, and the first steps to rebuild destroyed research posts and nurseries. Every donation, large or small, will go straight to FKL and HAkA for joint disaster response and recovery in Aceh, so that people can get out of danger today and get essential equipment and supplies back in place so lifesaving conservation work can continue.
